The representation of the Holy Spirit as a dove has its root in the New Testament narrative. When Jesus gets baptised by John, the heavens open and the Spirit of God descends upon him like a dove (Matthew 3:16). The dove is also an important figure in the Book of Genesis where it announces to Noah the end of the flood (Genesis 8:11).

Against a background of gold leaf symbolising the heavens, the white bird flies with outstretched wings. This bodily position echoes that of the crucified Christ, emphasising the shared divine nature between the Holy Spirit and Jesus.

It carries in its beak an olive branch, as narrated in Genesis, to announce a renewed world. The dove has been used throughout history as a symbol of hope, love and peace.
