Mary Magdalene (diptych)

Mary Magdalene Crying, 2026
Mary Magdalene was a follower of Jesus Christ during His journey throughout the Holy Land. She was among the believers who supported His ministry financially (Luke 8:1–3). Her wealth is suggested in both paintings by the gold bracelet and ring she wears. Her red garment evokes her physical beauty veiled by chastity. She has often been depicted as naked, sensual or seductive, having been mistakenly identified as a repentant prostitute. This reputation, however, has no firm historical or scriptural basis.

Mary Magdalene Surprised, 2026
After the death of Jesus and His burial in a nearby garden, Mary Magdalene returned there on the third day, only to discover that the tomb was open. She began to weep because Jesus’ body was missing. As she turned around, she saw the risen Christ (John 20:1-18).
The two paintings were executed simultaneously, layer by layer, using the same research materials, and colour palette. Together, they form a diptych that expresses the change from one emotional state to another. Mary Magdalene moves from despair to surprise, from tears to hope. The physical separation between the two paintings represents the space in which faith, invisible and intangible, can arise.
